The dating site saw its first party night in Walkabout last weekend. Would it be plain-sailing for singletons or a plunge into murky waters. When you were young, did you ever dream about meeting the love of your life and living happily ever after? Let me guess – Prince Charming seemed great on his Plenty of Fish account and looked even better when your eyes met across a crowded room in Walkabout, right?
Online matchmaking is a multi million pound industry, which is evolving every day and it’s undeniable that the whole world is hooked. With over 1million registered users, POF is, of course, one of the best known and most lucrative dating sites. Combined with its success and that of the likes of Tinder and Match. So the event seemed peculiar to me. It was like the online world was suddenly entering into real life, virtual reality and actuality were merging and it was happening in Walkabout on Renfield Street of all places.
Creating and maintaining relationships online through “likes” and “comments” or by “swiping right” has been criticised for killing good old face to face communication, so I thought maybe this event was an attempt to take a step back towards a more traditional way of bringing people together. Scanning the Facebook details on the event page, I noticed the promise that this POF singles night would be the “first of many” and I couldn’t help but wonder if we were on the brink of yet another change in the dating game.

When we sadly closed our doors back in March, we made sure, in the great tradition of the theatre, to leave a light on the stage. The ghost light will be switched off, and our beer palace chandeliers turned on. The ovens will be fired up, the tanks brimmed with fresh chilled beer, the coffee machines heated and the staff raring to go. Set to be an exciting mix of great food, fantastic beer and some incredible music on our Beer Palace stage. This means that some things will inevitably be different.

The scientists have a patent pending for the technology. The new PIMS system has halved the time it takes to date carbon-containing material from anywhere in the world, and is much simpler: the SUERC scientists have gone from working with a system the size of a large bus, to one the size of a small family car. Carbon dating is used to determine the age of materials and artefacts with a biological origin – plants, fossils, bones, shells, soil and much more – up to around 50, years old.
It works by measuring residual concentrations of carbon – 14, a radioactive isotope, in the material. It is not an exaggeration to say the global carbon dating community has its eyes on East Kilbride to see how this advances our field. It will transform carbon dating, which remains a specialist area of research with only around laboratories worldwide.
We had to extract tiny samples from the material, whether a bone, piece of soil or a fiber, and burn the samples to turn them into carbon dioxide gas. The radiocarbon facility provides UK scientists and international collaborators with radiocarbon measurements, for a range of Earth and environmental science projects.
The laboratory has a current capacity for about 1, samples annually, including a range of sample types covering virtually every environment on Earth, from atmospheric gases to deep ocean sediments. Skip to main content.

Following a brilliant night of creative matchmaking, we caught up with some Maker Speed Dater attendees to get an insight into the event. This July, a range of makers and manufacturers joined together for some speedy networking in an exciting new format. Think speed dating for creatives, with score cards, buzzers, hastened conversations and more Here’s what our attendees had to say I think Maker Speed Dater is a brilliant idea- I really appreciate the chance to meet so many people in a short space of time, and to quickly suss out whether there’s any opportunity for collaboration.
I met loads of lovely folks and had a great time! Exchanged lots of contacts, and loads of exciting opportunities that I’m looking forward to exploring. I live near Elie in Fife and work from home in an outbuilding. There was a really interesting mixture of people, many of whom work for themselves and wanted to find makers with particular capabilities for particular projects.
It’s always fascinating to hear and see what other talented people do.
